연당 살포(powdered sugar dusting)를 이용한 바로아 응애 구제법

친환경 양봉을 위해서 응애를 완전히 박멸하기 보다는 벌이 건강하게 클 수 있는 만큼의 낮은 수준으로 응애의 수를 낮추는 데 촛점을 맞추는 것 같다. organic bee keeping을 추구하는 사람들은 화학적으로 만든 살충제(formic acid 개미산, oxalic acid 옥살산을 포함한 모든 농약)을 피하고 벌에게 전혀 해가 없고 잔류되어도 문제가 없는 물질을 사용하려고 한다. 그렇게 하기 위해서 티몰을 섞은 파라핀오일(내쳐럴 오일)을 연무기로 뿌리는 방법과 연당을 풀무기로 소비에 뿌려서 엷은 막을 만들어 바로아 응애를 죽이는 방법을 사용할 수 있다. 여기에서는 연당(powdered sugar)를 벌통 안에, 즉 소비에 뿌리는 처치법을 소개하겠다.

2주에 한 번씩 총 3회 연당처치(sugar dusting)를 함으로써 응애구제를 할 수 있다.

대부분의 응애를 제거하기 위해서는 3일마다 한 번식 sugar dusting을 하되 3주 동안 계속 처치해줘야 한다고 주장하기도 한다.

So dusting every 3 days should be adequate to knock down most of the mites. Such treatment would need to be continued for about 3 weeks.

여기 비디오에서는 바로아 응애가 있는지 확인하기 위해서 한 컵의 벌을 유리병에 넣고 거기에 에탄올을 넣어서 벌을 죽이고 나중에 그 벌을 채로 쳐서 하얀 종위 위에 응애가 있는 지 확인하고 있다.

벌을 죽이지 않고 응애를 확인하는 방법이 벌 한 컵을 유리병에 넣고 엘탄올 알콜을 넣지 말고 설탕가루(연당)를 큰 수저로 한 수저 유리병에 넣고 흔들어서 1분정도 놔두었다가 병을 입구에 철망을 대고 거꾸로 흔들어주면 응애와 설탕가루(연당)이 떨어져 나온다. 그리고 살아 있는 벌은 다시 벌통에 집어넣어준다. 이렇게 벌을 죽이지 않고 응애를 확인할 수 있다.

You can put the bees in the jar the same way you did but instead of adding the rubbing alcohol add a heaping tablespoon of the powdered sugar into the jar that has a screen top on it. Then shake the bees around in the powdered sugar and let it sit for about a min. for the mites to be continued from below. Then shake the jar upside down onto a flat surface and the mites and powdered sugar will fall out and keep your bees alive. Count the mites and put the bees back into the hive. That's the way I do it without killing any of my bees. take care and care for the bees.

이 비디오에서 사용하고 있는 기기가 bee sugar duster이다. sugar dusting을 하기 위해 만들어진 것인데, fanned nozzle을 제거하고 소비를 꺼내서 bee sugar duster를 가지고 소비 하나씩 가루를 뿌리고 있다.소비에 아주 미세하고 얇은 연당 막을 입히는 것이다. 벌집에 직접 들어가게 뿌리지 않고 연당이 소비를 대각선으로 뿌려지도록 뿌린다. 그리고 벌들의 등을 가로질러 뿌려지도록 한다. 여기에서 사용한 도구가 "bee sugar duster"이다.

It's made for sugar-dusting. I bought at a bee supply. It's just a pair of bellows with a tube to hold your sugar. I've since removed the fanned nozzle and pull the frames out and dust them individually with this device. It's puts a nice, light coat of sugar on them. I never point it directly in towards the cells, but rather, blow it across the frames... across the backs of the bees. Google "bee sugar duster" to find one.

연당(powdered sugar)은 설탕과 옥수수녹말(cornstarch)가 있는데, 옥수수녹말은 벌들에게 좋지 않다. 아주 미세한 설탕, 즉 연당을 사용하는 것이 좋다. 제과점에서 연당을 살 수도 있고 일반 흰설탕을 약 1분만 음식 처리기(food processor)에 넣으면 연당을 만들 수 있다. 

Powdered sugar is sugar and cornstarch. I've heard the cornstarch isn't good for bees and it's better to use ultra-fine sugar. You can buy it at a baking store or put regular sugar in a food processor for about one minute. You'll need one cup of sugar per deep.

<참고>

액체 개미산을 사용하는 것은 미국에서 불법이고 캐나다와 독일에서는 가능하다고 하네요. 그런데 개미산이 EU에서도 불법이라는 의견도 있네요. (독일도 EU 회원국인데 독일에서 가능하다는 말이 이해가 안 됩니다. 우리나라에서는 개미산이 친환경적인 처치라고 알려져 있는데, 외국에서는 다른 견해를 가지고 있는 것 같습니다.)

개미산 처치에 대한 결정은 양봉인이 화학약품으로부터 자유로워질 것이나 아니냐 하는 의지의 문제이다. drone frame과 podered sugar dusting이 가장 많이 사용되는 화학약품으로부터 자유로운 방법(chemical-free method)이다. 화학약품을 발라놓은 띠(chemical strip)를 사용해 응애 방제 처치를 하는 것이 가장 선호되는 화학적 방법이다. 옥살산과 개미산을 직접 적용하는 방법은 일반적으로 사용되지 않는다. 그 이유는 더 시간이 들기 때문이다. 그러나 개미산과 옥살산 처리가 훨씬 더 저렴한 비용이 든다.

Formic acid actually illegal in liquid form in the US, but not in Canada/elsewhere. The treatment decision is based on the beekeeper's desire to be chemical-free or not. Drone frames and powdered sugar dusting are the two most highly used chemical-free methods, and I would guess that chemical strips are the preferred chemical method. Direct application of oxalic acid and formic acid aren't commonly used because they take more time, but they're a lot cheaper.
